Founded by Didier Wolff in 2010 in Strasbourg, France, Happy Design Studio has become a reference in original livery designs on any type of aircraft. The small, dedicated team shares the same passion for a job well done. Ultimately, their aim is to be as proud of the livery as the aircraft’s owner. “I work from 3D models, extremely detailed, in order to take in the livery design from all angles. Then it must be checked with aeronautical engineers in order to make sure it can be done.” Personal approach to the job is a determining factor, explains Wolff. “Some people are highly professional, and others are less so. Not necessarily within the biggest organizations will you find someone on the floor able to manage his team so that the result is exactly what we were looking for. There is a great motivation that needs to be transmitted to everyone involved. Some smaller organizations might believe in this approach, even if they are not the best equipped, while larger ones may simply not have it.” And Didier adds: “It’s just like cooking, if you prepare a meal without loving doing it, it will never taste as good!” According to the aircraft’s location and the timeframe during which the painting is scheduled, Happy Design Studio will assist the customer in selecting the most appropriate paint shop among its handpicked network of professionals. The Studio will also help getting the best prices and slots. Around 50% of the activity has been dedicated to private jet projects, the rest is balanced between military and airlines. “From now on, the private aviation sector is expected to grow more significantly as the response from this segment of the market to the Studio’s designs is highly encouraging,” says Wolff. Dealing with aircraft manufacturers’ marketing departments is often more frustrating than creating a custom design for a private owner. Business aviation is more accessible with direct contact with the owner or the owner’s representative. This makes for more enriching relationships. However, adds Wolff, “often our customers have only a faint idea of what it is exactly that they want… A design approach for the aircraft’s exterior can reveal so much more of the owner’s identity. It brings soul and feelings to the graceful ballet in the sky.”

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT Didier Wolff, owner and designer at Happy Design Studio, will present a new, creative approach to business jet livery. 2:00pm, Wednesday 20 March 2013 the start on precise 3D models, to consider the design from all angles. We verify its full compatibility with aeronautical engineers and supervise the painting process with the selected paint shop. What trends are affecting livery? Owners usually go with the constructor’s catalogue (the usual two or three lines or latest designs), they add a logo or a personal fantasy, without considering it as a specific design matter. It is often because they have not been properly informed that it can be changed, or considered the benefits of designing something special for the exterior. The line, though, is starting to move: it is then a matter of taste and technicality. Why is a distinctive livery important for business jets? It is exactly like asking why all birds are not white. The aircraft by itself is an artwork. It is such a wonderful object to personalise, from extremely discreet but intense details to a beautiful expression of its owner’s personality. A design approach for the exterior can add even more spirit and feeling; do justice to what is already a beautiful object. How does your approach differ? I give the same attention to an exterior design as any other designer or studio would give to the interior. It requires strong technical knowledge and a very specific design approach. We work from Who needs to attend your presentation? Anyone who wants to see our design approach and how it can, to some extent, shuffle the cards in the aeronautical industry.

BRABUS — FROM THE AUTOMOBILE DREAM TO BUSINESS AVIATION PERFECTION The world of the automobile and the world of aviation are once again coming closer together by the passionate effort of a new company that is combining proven strengths. After more than thirty-five years in the service of the four-wheeled, earthbound vehicle, the German car customization specialist is now conquering the next element by establishing its new BRABUS Private Aviation division, a one-stop shop for business aviation customers. But what can we really expect from this new collaboration between an automobile car tuner and the world of business aviation? A glimpse inside reveals that it will surely be more than just slapping some “stripes” on a cabin or two. It was at EBACE that BRABUS first revealed the existence of its subsidiary BRABUS Private Aviation, and for all intents and purposes the German company has entered the aviation sector with characteristic vigor. Knowing that entering the field of business aviation required the collaboration of experienced partners, the team built its new design and completion program with three globally recognized companies: PrivatAir, RUAG Aviation and Happy Design Studio. A MEETING OF TWO WORLDS The origin of the project lies in a meeting at the Dubai Air Show 2011 between BRABUS and PrivatAir. Two worlds serving a similar clientele came together: high-end automotive and business aviation. The idea was simple: business aviation should meet the same expectations of personalization and innovation as luxury cars. While the automotive industry had already responded to this demand, aviation had not yet reached the same level of “freshness,” leading clients to turn to BRABUS. Why couldn’t design features from modern cars be integrated into aircraft cabins? The idea was straightforward but quickly encountered technical and legal constraints. However, both industries share the same requirements for quality and reliability. “Our idea was and still is to apply our decades of experience with top-of-the-range cars such as Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Range Rover to business aviation,” explains Constantin Buschmann. “Before this project, many customers asked us to align their aircraft with their cars in terms of quality and style. BRABUS Private Aviation is our answer.” With this concept, BRABUS goes beyond branding to introduce a new interior philosophy integrating advanced communication and information technologies. To address aeronautical constraints, RUAG Aviation and Happy Design Studio were brought in. THREE VERY DISTINCT STYLES BRABUS Private Aviation offers three interior design lines: Elegance, Sportive and Essence. Elegance features light tones with beige leather, Alcantara and fine wood finishes. Essence introduces a “yachting” inspiration, including carpeting reminiscent of ocean surfaces. Sportive draws from high-performance automotive design, with darker tones, black leather, red stitching and carbon fiber elements replacing traditional wood. CHANGING RECEIVED WISDOM On the exterior side, BRABUS Private Aviation adopts a radically different approach. It is one of the first to integrate interior and exterior design into a unified concept, treating the aircraft’s exterior with equal importance. This philosophy, inherited from automotive design, challenges the conservative norms of the aviation industry. In collaboration with Didier Wolff of Happy Design Studio, BRABUS developed bold black, grey and beige liveries for aircraft such as the Bombardier Global Express and Embraer Legacy 600. “There is a fresh and modern feel to BRABUS interiors, and the use of innovative materials like carbon fiber was highly inspiring for exterior design,” explains Wolff. Clients can choose between predefined designs or fully customized liveries. Designing a feasible yet progressive aircraft livery requires extensive research and must account for constraints across multiple aircraft types. UN INTÉRIEUR MADE IN GERMANY RUAG Aviation is responsible for cabin design and completion. All interiors are developed in close collaboration with BRABUS to translate automotive luxury into aviation. Clients can opt for new aircraft completion or refurbishment of existing jets, ranging from simple upgrades to full redesigns. Production is initially limited to two aircraft per year. According to Robin A. Freigang of RUAG Aviation, this partnership enables the delivery of one of the most exclusive design and completion packages on the market, particularly for Bombardier Global, Dassault Falcon and Embraer Legacy aircraft. AVIATION AND LUXURY MARKET KNOWLEDGE Finally, BRABUS Private Aviation partnered with PrivatAir to leverage over 35 years of expertise in aircraft management, charter and operations. This ensures a deep understanding of customer expectations. “The BRABUS Private Aviation concept perfectly matches the clientele we know,” says Christian Hatje of PrivatAir. “It is not just about interior and exterior design, but about creating a platform for next-generation technology and personalization. The potential to redefine business aviation interiors is enormous, and the BRABUS brand is perfectly positioned for it.”

Integration of Multimedia devices into the aircraft. After landing the design on the EC 145, BRABUS Private Aviation offers the complete BRABUS 800 Business sedan, offering the same level of comfort and integration for the multimedia tools in the cabin. Every little part is taken care of and a carbon fiber design is applied onto the drift. Different versions of the design are now available for the Brabus Private Aviation customers, and the first few are available in black, white or grey to suit different tastes. The BRABUS livery certified here on Eurocopter EC 145 lends a very modern appearance. Several pure features like the door handles and specific surfaces on the airframe, such as the honeycomb patterns and specially painted, horizontally striped mass rotor blades create an absolutely unique look that together with the black body of the aircraft represents the signature BRABUS style. The effect of the composite carbon fibre once again pointing out the spirit of the brand. Furthermore BRABUS lightning concept for lighting the ground under the landing skids are yet another feature transferred from BRABUS supercars to the BRABUS helicopter design. First adapted to a Eurocopter EC145, compilation on all helicopter models is just a matter of time and resources as it all depends on customer’s requests and slots availability as all designs are based on specific aircraft models. To ensure the success of the concept, the BRABUS Group forged an alliance with three prominent partners from the aviation industry: PrivatAir, a Geneva aircraft operations and management company with a global network of aviation experts and 600 flights operations, one of the most respected companies for maintenance and completion work for both private jets and helicopters, based in Munich, Germany. HAPPY DESIGN STUDIO with its many years of experience in the development and quality execution of individual liveries for a wide variety of aircraft. ARTICLE N° 171 / AIRLINER WORLD

Read full article (text version) Source : Airliner World ‘CARE BY AIR’ Programme / This article is reproduced for archival purposes. Jointly launched in November 2009 by Maximus Air Cargo, Etihad Airways and ADAC (Abu Dhabi Airports Company), the ‘Care By Air’ non-profit initiative enables airlines to donate unused belly space or cost in order to deliver relief aid to disaster-stricken areas around the world. Supporting members to the initiative include the UAE Red Crescent and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), while further partner organisations are expected to join the cause. Maximus Air Cargo’s CEO, Farhad Gamha, together with Etihad Airways CEO James Hogan and ADAC’s Director of Cargo Operations, Ahmed Al Haddabi, pledged their support as founding members by signing a memorandum of understanding. The initiative was given impetus by supporting members represented by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak, Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority, and Farhad Gamha, Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme. The rationale of the ‘Care By Air’ programme – open to cargo and hybrid airlines as well as to airports and freight forwarders – is that currently only 70% of the maximum cargo loading capacity on commercial services worldwide is used. This suggests that up to four million tonnes of empty space are flown every week, from more than 1,700 airports across 220 countries. On this basis, if only 0.003% of this space were to be made available, it would provide enough room to bid for a day. ‘Care By Air’ aims to provide cargo services to relief and humanitarian organisations ‘at cost’ across its network of partner organisations and businesses, ensuring the distribution of humanitarian aid is more cost-effective. “Our commitment to humanitarians and relief organisations worldwide and their mission to show the ‘Care By Air’ concept successfully in practice. Together with our partners we have demonstrated how the ‘Care By Air’ at cost business model can really work to reduce costs in the field of humanitarian aid,” said Farhad Gamha, Country Director for the United Nations WFP from the UAE. Cargo carriers participating in ‘Care By Air’ are invited to quote the organisation a number of humanitarian flights ‘at cost’. The sustainability of the model comes as each airline depending not its internal costs structure. For Maximus Air, the economic model works due to the varied routes it operates. The airline will benefit from having its variable cost structure improved while fixed costs including maintenance will be spread over a higher aircraft utilisation, finally reducing the economic cost base as the fleet grows in size. Benefits for the airline also include a return in terms of image as the carrier is entitled to use the ‘Care By Air’ logo on its aircraft and will receive extensive media coverage by the organisation. Maximus Air today The airline today operates in a number of specialised but related sectors including charters carrying outsized air cargo, wet leasing aircraft, transportation of dangerous goods, VIP flights, rapid response within the horses’ traction and humanitarian support to virtually any destination worldwide. It is also well respected in the specialised area of transporting horses and other animals. In 2010 the company recorded 10,278 flying hours and a total revenue of $116.6 million a 38% and 18.0% increase respectively compared to the previous year. Despite this growth, in 2011, Maximus’ fleet composition was changing, with its older Boeing B747 D-74 being sold, so that the company could focus on both the ACMI sector as well as possibly developing its own scheduled operations. Three new Airbuses were acquired to replace them. The airline continued its rapid fleet on July and September 2011 and February 2012. These are ex Japan Airlines passenger aircraft converted by European Aeronautic and Space Company’s (EADS) Elite Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, Germany. Two are being used on the regional scheduled cargo network for Etihad Cargo, while at the 2011 Dubai Air Show, Maximus announced a further development to its business partnership outside the Middle East after signing an ACMI deal with DHL. Under the terms of this contract, two of the newly-converted Airbuses operate freight corridor across Europe. “We are delighted to have been selected by one of the world’s foremost logistics companies to provide them with these aircraft under an ACMI agreement,” said President and CEO Fathi Hilal Binhafiz at the show. “They have already started flying on their new routes and this extends our reach into the UAE and the region and further into international aviation as part of our new growth strategy.” Thanks to Johanne McGonachy, Marketing Manager Maximus Air, for her help in preparing this article. “WITH THE GLOBAL ACMI WET-LEASE BUSINESS GROWING AT AROUND 18% PER YEAR, MAXIMUS LAUNCHED A FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN IN 2007 AND INTRODUCED TWO AIRBUS A300-622RFS.” The Airbus A300Bs (2,200 are capable of carrying 45 tonnes of freight) The latest Airbuses are Japan Airlines passenger aircraft converted by European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company’s (EADS) Elite Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, Germany

United Arab Emirates 13 JULY 2012 Maximus Air targets Far East market Discovery Reports Jacinta Plucinski and Eleanor Ng — Thursday, 27 September, 2012, 11:05am Maximus Air’s new livery represents the vision and innovation of a proud UAE airline. Operating out of Abu Dhabi International Airport, Maximus Air has grown to become one of the world’s most respected all-air cargo operators in just seven years of operation. The company has an expanding customer base in the fast-growing markets of Asia and Africa. “Passenger travel has developed over the last 10 years while cargo transport has remained the same. We can develop the cargo market more,” says president and CEO Fathi Buhazza. “Business relationships must change. From mere suppliers and customers, it’s now about partnerships. We’re looking for synergies and solid business relationships.” As a former flight director for Abu Dhabi’s presidential flight, Buhazza focused on operational excellence and introduced service innovations when he helped set up Maximus Air in 2005. The company can launch deliveries within six hours’ notice. Each plane also has an on-board flight manager serving as a single point of contact for clients. Under Buhazza’s leadership, the company’s operational revenues and profits have consistently grown. Shareholders have enjoyed profit since inception – an achievement that flies against industry norms. Specialising in moving outsized air cargo of up to 120 tonnes, the company utilises its fleet comprising an Antonov An-124-100, five Airbus A300-600RP2Fs and two Ilyushin IL-76TDs. Other segments include transport of dangerous goods, live animals, VIPs, rapid response and humanitarian payloads. The flexibility and diversity of its fleet render the company equally capable of operating ad-hoc charters or high-utilisation aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) scheduled service environments. Long-term clients include the likes of Etihad Cargo, and Maximus Air aims to extend the offering to cargo forwarders and start-up companies. The company’s philosophy is rooted in offering customers responsive, practical and cost-effective solutions combined with personal customer service. Humanitarian and relief operations have always been a key component of Maximus Air’s operations. Work in this area led to the creation of “Care by Air”, a groundbreaking humanitarian relief aid initiative launched in 2009 in collaboration with UAE national airline Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi Airports.

 JUILLET 2012

Read full article (text version) appliedart Didier Wolff, owner/designer at Happy Design Studio, sheds light on the art of designing business jet liveries How much of your work is on business jets? Around 50% of our work has been on private jet projects – the rest is divided between military and airline work. We expect private jet activity to grow more than the other areas from now on, due to the response from this market to our designs. Do your liveries reflect the interior design? It is one scenario, if wished by the owner. The interior design can also be inspired by the livery. Nevertheless, there is no reason why they can’t be different. In such cases, the aircraft door is the passage from one world to the other, between what is displayed and what is private. Have you ever had to guide a client away from an idea that wouldn’t work? In some, rare, situations, requests are too far away from what the aircraft’s curves and natural aesthetic can take. I also couldn’t work on a project that I couldn’t identify with. Our clients understand that it is possible to depart from the usual classic scheme. What is the most challenging aspect? Supervising the painting process. In the paint shop I have a limited time frame to ensure that the design will adapt perfectly onto the aircraft with absolutely no mistakes. This part of the job brings together a devoted team with absolute precision. As with a musical instrument, the livery must be tuned up perfectly and thrill from every angle. During the creation phase I dedicate my attention to all the angles the aircraft can be seen from – from underneath of course, but also from a terminal room and from air-to-air shooting angles, so for instance it can be used to promote the company’s new identity. Definitely, the supervision part is by far the most thrilling phase. How often are business jets painted? Each aircraft type has its own cycle of technical checks so there is no general answer for this question. On top of that, in most cases an aircraft will require a paint job when it is sold. What paint do you use? Unless this is left to us to decide, we often go with the workshop’s usual paint supplier. In all cases, we make sure the paint is made according to our requirements for quality. We usually use a base coat followed by a clear coat, a rather new technique that allows complex coloured designs to be implemented with as little as possible impact on the aircraft’s downtime. Painting time depends on various issues – the aircraft size, the condition of its existing paint, the complexity of the design – but roughly between five and 15 days. How do you ensure accuracy? We supervise the painting process every time. It is mandatory because without this close and intense supervision, no matter how great the paint shop is, third parties’ interpretations of lines, curves, intensity, proportions, and so on, will affect the overall balance of the design. Even with the back-up of an engineering order (a technical map of the design on the aircraft scheme) adjustments on the real aircraft are always necessary. I personally supervise each step of the painting process, from colour checking to final inspection. What’s your favourite past project? I think of it every day – when the French Air Force let me work on two Rafales, to be painted in five days within the French Army base at 113 St Dizier. All conditions – human and technical – united to create the perfect job.

Exclusives Applied art Didier Wolff of Happy Design Studio sheds light on the art of painting business jets Didier Wolff of Happy Design Studio sheds light on the art of painting business jets How did you get into designing liveries for business jets? I have worked with images, creation and design all my life. Writing, acting, sculpture, photography and design are some of the areas I have worked in. Getting my flying licence brought me closer to the aviation world and naturally led me to the alliance of design and aircraft. The common thread of all these experiences is the continuous quest of beautifying. With posters, the gallery is the open public area, the street. With aircraft livery design, the gallery is the open sky. Happy Design Studio started three years ago as a logical continuation of this rich experience and we received a fantastic response from the aeronautical industry. How much of your work is on business jets? Around 50% of our work has been on private jet projects — the rest is divided between military and airline work. We expect private jet activity to grow more than the other areas from now on, due to the response from this market to our designs. Do your designs have to reflect the interior design? It is one scenario, if wished by the owner. The interior design can also be inspired by the livery. Nevertheless, there is no reason why they can’t be different. In such cases, the aircraft door is the passage from one world to the other, between exterior and interior, between what is displayed and what is private. Have you ever had to guide a client away from a design you didn’t think would work? In some, rare situations, requests are too far away from what the aircraft’s curves and natural aesthetics can take. I also couldn’t work on a project that I couldn’t identify with. Do you notice differences in design preferences between regions? We do not categorise our customers by region. To each the same extreme open-mindedness. Nevertheless, it is important to know that it is possible to depart from the usual classic scheme. Personal will and audacity are important traits of our clients. What is the most challenging aspect of your job? Supervising the painting process. In the paint shop I have a limited time frame to ensure that the design will adapt perfectly onto the aircraft with absolutely no mistakes. This part of the job brings together a devoted team with absolute precision. As with a musical instrument, the livery must be tuned up perfectly and thrill from every angle. During the creation phase I dedicate my attention to all the angles the aircraft can be seen from — from a terminal room and from air-to-air shooting angles, so for instance it can be used to promote the company’s new identity. Definitely, the supervision part is by far the most thrilling phase because everyone creates a unique and extremely personal aircraft. When we are supervising the painting of the aircraft before the final result is delivered to the owner, we have to be proud of the work that has been done. How often do business jets have to be painted? Each aircraft type has its own cycle of technical checks so there is no general answer for this question. On top of that, in most cases an aircraft will require a paint job when it is sold. What paint do you use? Unless the question is left to us to decide, we often go with the workshop’s usual paint supplier. In all cases, we make sure the paint is made according to our requirements for quality. We usually use a base coat followed by a clear coat, a rather new technique that allows complex coloured designs to be implemented with as little as possible impact on the aircraft’s downtime. How long does the painting process take? Painting time depends on various issues: the aircraft size, the condition of its existing paint, the complexity of the design. But roughly between five and 15 days. Definitely another military aircraft. Do you regularly work with the same paint facilities? We have our network of companies. Sometimes a new paint shop has to be built through what is always a lengthy selection process — painting a challenging design with the team for the first time requires a deep common understanding and a full knowledge of each paint shop’s specificities and limits. Nevertheless, sometimes we have to comply with the customer’s constraints and use the facility ourselves. Most of the time this is for the best, as it increases mutual knowledge. How do you ensure the design is adhered to accurately? This is one of our major challenges and the reason why I attend every painting every time. It is mandatory because without this close and intense supervision, no matter how great the paint shop is, third parties’ interpretations of lines, curves, intensity, proportions, etc will affect the overall balance of the design. Even with the back-up of an engineering order (a technical map of the design on the aircraft scheme) adjustments on the real aircraft are always necessary. I personally supervise each step of the painting process, from colour checking to final inspection. What has been your most memorable project so far? I think of it each and every day — when the French Air Force let me work on two Rafales, to be painted in five days within the French Army base at 113 St Dizier. All conditions — human and technical — united to create the perfect job. The trust they put into my work — giving me the opportunity to work on aircraft worth US$170 million each by just telling me “It’s yours now” — gave me wings. There was also a feeling of brotherhood, to be accepted as a civilian to work within such a small and unique community. What future projects would you most like to work on? Definitely another military aircraft. Didier Wolff is owner/designer at Happy Design Studio — www.happydesign.net This interview was conducted in June 2012.

Now, in addition to exclusive automobiles and yachts, Brabus Group is turning its attention to private jets, offering exclusive design and manufacturing for the cabins of brand-new executive jets as well as the redesign and customization of aircraft already in service. The company took advantage of the 12th European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva last week to present two designs – ‘Elegance’ and ‘Sportive’ – for Bombardier’s Global Express. The concept has been implemented through Brabus Group’s alliance with three prominent aviation partners: PrivatAir, a leading aircraft operations and management company with a global network of aviation experts and facilities, RUAG Aviation, one of the most respected companies for maintenance and completion work located in Munich and Happy Design Studio with its many years of experience in the development and execution of extraordinary liveries. “The exclusive customization of aircraft is a logical evolution of our product portfolio,” explains Prof. h. c. Bodo Buschmann , CEO of the German Brabus Group. “In the past we have been approached by a number of our customers asking us to design and outfit their private jet. That’s why in addition to our marine division we now also have the Brabus Private Aviation business division.” Matching the design style of the cabin, the Brabus designers also create extraordinary exterior designs which give each jet its very own individual character. The ‘Elegance’ design creates an exclusive, bright atmosphere with a combination of cream-colored Brabus fine leather, Alcantara and high-end wood applications. As is the case for all Brabus interiors, the designers and upholsterers pay particular attention to a perfect finish of the cabin-components down to the very last detail. This encompasses the precise color coordination of all interior components including the elaborately designed wood trim with high-gloss finish. The ‘Sportive’ design line sets an exciting contrast in the cabin. Its combination of black and gray leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber lends the cabin a fresh and progressive appearance. The perfectly finished carbon-fiber elements and the seat design with red contrasting seams are inspired by the design of exclusive sports cars. Sourcing, purchasing and aircraft-management services are offered through Brabus’ private aviation network in connection with PrivatAir, whilst completion and redesign takes place at RUAG’s facilities in Munich, Germany. All Brabus Private Aviation completion and refurbishment work is certifiable by EASA and FAA. Finally, Happy Design Studio provides the necessary professional experience and avantgarde thinking for the creation of detailed and unique exterior designs that let every jet designed by Brabus Private Aviation stand out from the crowd.

HAPPY DESIGN STUDIO by Jim Gregory RUNWAY CANVAS A FRENCH DESIGN FIRM MAKES A CASE FOR PERSONALISED JET LIVERY Listening closely to a client is how Happy Design Studio begins each project. The studio knows that the exterior look of an aircraft is guided by its owner’s status as much as clothing reflects the wearer’s style. “When travelling, a business jet conveys a strong personality,” explains Didier Wolff, Happy Design’s founder and designer. Wolff notes that aircraft owners often take great pride in their aircraft’s appearance, particularly those who use them as business tools or personal transports. He sees aircraft livery as an opportunity for owners to make a statement. “Exterior paint is the only place where the aircraft truly belongs to its owner,” he says. The studio’s owner and designer Didier Wolff prefers to explore ideas freely, seeking the strongest visual impact while maintaining harmony with the aircraft’s aerodynamic form. Wolff often works from initial inspirations or abstract concepts that gradually evolve into aircraft liveries. His process is similar to that of a fashion designer: working with proportions, curves, and colours until a coherent visual identity emerges. Didier Wolff’s fascination with designing and painting aircraft liveries comes from his background in design and branding. His studio collaborates closely with engineers and aviation specialists to ensure that creative ideas remain compatible with technical constraints. Some of Wolff’s designs break traditional aesthetic barriers; others integrate well with the more conservative aeronautical industry environment. The design inspiration often comes from artistic influences, architecture, nature, fashion and even graphic design. The objective is always to create a livery that is distinctive, elegant and memorable. Multiple combinations are possible, says Wolff. “Some aircraft owners have chosen vivid colour combinations and strong patterns for a bold statement, while others prefer subtle, refined details.” Wolff emphasizes that even very small visual elements can significantly transform the identity of an aircraft. EVEN A SIMPLE, TINY DETAIL TRANSFORMS A JET’S INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY Didier Wolff’s designs have covered business jets like the Falcon 7X and Global Express, as well as other aircraft types. His work has included designs for the AirClub of Monaco and other operators. SOME DESIGNS NEED TO LOOK GREAT FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES, AS AN AIRCRAFT IS USED FOR AIRSHOW DEMONSTRATIONS Happy Design Studio manages the entire design project and collaborates with completion centres and paint facilities to implement the livery. Wolff often supervises the painting process personally to ensure the final result corresponds precisely to the design concept. The design studio works closely with aeronautical paint shops to ensure aesthetics comply with technical requirements. PAINTED PRINCE Happy Design Studio’s liveries can fly aboard a wide range of business aircraft, VIP helicopters, airliners and military aircraft. None is more flamboyant than a one-off design for the Tiger Meet demonstration aircraft for the French Air Force. The studio’s owner and designer Didier Wolff also designed a temporary livery for a Dassault Rafale fighter to celebrate its accumulation of 5,000 flight hours for an Escadron de Chasse unit based at Saint-Dizier in eastern France. Wolff painted the aircraft’s vertical stabiliser with black and gold waves – a design that would be used for demonstration flights by the air force. Its design had to be appreciated from all possible angles.

This is one of the reasons we engaged the services of one of the aviation industry’s most creative designer of aircraft liveries, Didier Wolff and his Happy Design Studio in France to help shape the new brand within the context of this new strategy. “The roll-out marks another very exciting chapter in our journey to become one of the top brands in this industry,” he said, “and I don’t think there will be many other all-cargo carriers with such great looking aircraft.” Wolff, founder of Happy Design who has been in ADAT supervising the repainting of the Airbus A300-600RP2F was equally excited with the end result: “I would like to record my appreciation to Maximus Air’s CEO for his vision and audacity in selecting a design of this complexity and to the ADAT team who did a magnificent job in transferring the design from the conception onto the aircraft. They did it a highly professional job displaying the highest level of workmanship while all the time paying particular attention to the entire fine detail. In fact they treated the project as though they were doing an oil painting rather than an aircraft. And this was all done against the backdrop of a very tight timeline.” The Airbus A300-600RP2F forms the core of the current Maximus fleet. This article is reproduced for archival purposes.

Wolff is the creative inspiration behind customised liveries on private jets, giving them their own visual identity and stamp of style that sets them apart from others. An example of his work can be seen in the photograph. “I designed the green livery on the Rafale one evening in my hotel room during the Dubai Airshow in 2009. It was just a creative concept that I wanted to portray,” said Wolff. As it happens, two years later the French Air Force authorised the black livery on two of the combat aircraft to celebrate 30,000 flying hours accumulated from the air base in Saint Dizier. Wolff is a graduate of the Art Decorative School of Strasbourg and has designed aircraft livery for a number of business jet owners for some years now. It is something he is passionate about. “The external decoration of a private aircraft depends on the owner’s desire to reveal an aspect of his personality or to impose his company’s character or image,” explained Wolff. Artistic guidance “Therefore, my work requires that I listen carefully and capture the essential traits of the project. This will guide the nature of my artistic proposals and ensure that all requirements are fulfilled, regardless of how high they are. The design applied to the fuselage is like a skin that would be delicately laid on the body. It can be dynamic, discrete, light or strong. They can also be coloured to the clients’ wish.” Wolff will be walking around the Bahrain Airshow hoping to meet with prospective business jet companies. “I want to communicate new livery ideas with private business jet owners and help them to stand out from the rest. The Bahrain Airshow is fantastic for this as it’s a very intimate and friendly show.” Didier Wolff showcases a couple of his livery designs at the show.
